The 3rd grade class learned about Polymers. They learned that a polymer is a chain of identical pieces. Plastic bags are made up of polymers and when a pencil is stuck through them the polymers form around the pencil to not allow the water to leak. Students were able to get between 30 and 76 pencils in their ziploc bags before they started leaking!
